Security in All-Optical Networks

General Description

Modern communication is geared more and more towards high bandwidth, but also on time and quality critical applications. Today's core network, constructed of optical fibers which are connected in electronic switching stations (OEM-systems), has several problems; limited bandwidth, high power consumption, delays, etc. Therefore, ongoing technology development leads towards so-called 'transparent' ( all-) optical networks in which these disadvantages are limited or totally absent. A transparent network also allows flexibility regarding data formats and possibility to base security solutions on quantum cryptographic key transfer. There are still some specific issues to take into consideration regarding optical networks, e g crosstalk between wavelength channels, optical error propagation through switches, and difficulties in tracking errors.

This project aims to make future optical networks robust and resistant against intentional and unintentional interference. Of course, it is important to deal with it in a cost effective manner. The project is therefore focusing on using existing hardware to make the network as robust as possible, i.e. without any extra costs regarding physical installation.

The project is a cooperation between KTH (School of Information and Communication Technology), Linköpings Universitet (Dept of Electrical Engineering), Santa Anna IT Research Institute AB and Net Insight AB. The project is financed by Vinnova and Net Insight AB.
